Several swallows skim the sunshiny surface of a blue lake, stopping on the branches of an old willow; jasmine’s aroma and people’s laughter pervade the whole place. It looks like spring always come to this old garden much earlier than to any other places in this small Chinese town. It was a paradise for flowers, trees and birds; it was a wonderful place for dating, playing and picnics; now it is just a memory only found in people’s dreams after a fire in 1998.
The garden’s name was Momiao, which means “beautiful picture”, and came from an ancient poetry. A mayor built this garden in 1783 as his private property. One hundred and fifty years gone, it became Public Park and one of the most famous and pleasant places in that small town. Every holiday, every weekend, every day, crows can be seen in every corner of the garden.
A teahouse was located in west part of Momiao garden, provided different teas and cakes, include some really special cakes, “grass cake” and “green tea cake” were both famous by their especial tastes and lovely colors! Not everybody may like them but really a lot of people are missing them now. Near the teahouse was a small lake with a wooden bridge; willows, birches and pine trees surrounded the lake; Mandarin ducks, mallards, pigeons walked in the wood; silence, peace, sunshine and happiness were everywhere.
The most interesting part in Momiao garden was a small zoo, it sounds wonderful, isn’t it? A zoo, with a real lion and an old tiger, several peacocks always fighting in their cage. Oh, couldn’t forget those monkeys, they have their own rockery and a small round pool, in summer; monkeys would climb to the rockery’s top and jump into the pool. Children bought fruits and cookies, threw them into monkey’s coop as well as their own mouths. The lion and the tiger were both sleepyheads, and never woke up before dusk. Anyway, they were real lion and tiger; their lived in Momiao garden as the emblem of this place.
However, everything has changed after the fire in the winter of 1998, the teahouse and other major buildings were burned up as well as most plants. The year after the fire, a new garden has been built on the ruins. European grass replaced the original plants, several strange modern sculptures were put on the grass, animals were sold to a big zoo in another city and, further, to instead the old zoo, a new building called “urban culture museum” was built. The new garden’s name is still “Momiao” but it is totally a different one. It is no longer free, it is so clean and modern, it is full of sculptures and smooth grass. No lonely lion and old tiger, no noisy monkeys and children, no “grass cakes” and “green tea cakes”. Fortunately, the monkey coop has been kept, as the last memento of the old garden.
