Martha Stewart - Queen of all Media?
Martha Stewart's recent release from prison has been covered endlessly on TV, Radio and Newspapers. Her presence has even been felt on the web. Take a look at Alexa's Top Search terms today and there she is at #2. Then in Alexa's Movers and Shakers her site, marthastewart.com is zooming up the rankings. Just take a look at this Reach chart showing the number of visitors to her Web site.

Suffering from Martha overload? You aren't alone. But there is some good news. Martha's 15 minutes are coming to an end. That spike in the graph went down yesterday just as fast as it went up. America's fascination is waning, and, let's hope, that the media circus will follow suit.

    Google Desktop Search API
Google recently released an update to their Google Desktop Search application. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, GDS allows you to search your own computer using a Google-like interface. Just type in a keyword, and see search results showing your own e-mails, word documents, pages in your Web history and more. The new version, in addition to being able to search e-mail, web history and MS Office documents, now allows you to search for Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox docs, images, video, music and PDF files. But, by far the most interesting twist on the new release is the fact that Google is allowing developers to build applications on top of GDS and inside of GDS. Link. So for example, if you are Macromedia, and you want Google Desktop Search to be able to search shockwave files, no problem... just write a plugin. Or, let's say you are Mozilla, and you would like to allow people to search their computer from within your Mozilla browser... no problem. This type of interface to Google Desktop Search, known as an API, opens some interesting possibilities. I'm sure Google doesn't yet know what will be built using it. And you can be just as sure that the folks up in Redmond are filling up whiteboards all across campus trying to untangle all the implications.

    Is This a Blog?
Lots of companies have blogs now, Yahoo, Google, Ask.com, Amazon.com. But are they really blogs or are they just another outlet for marketing? Blogs as we have come to know them are like personal journals... written for the public. They are late night top of the mind ramblings from uncompensated pajama clad writer wanna-be's. For better or worse. But what to make of these corporate blogs? Are they coopting the term? Are they redefining blogs or just pretenders? And what about Alexa? (Yes, this "blog" is brand new, just released in early March.) I don't know. I tend to think of the corporate blogs as free real estate for off-the-cuff press releases. There will probably be some of that here too. But my hope is that we are more than that and we can share in an open exchange of ideas with our audience and share some fun or interesting links as we go along. Welcome, and thank you for reading.
