gritty adj.
Definition:
having a rough feeling, not nice and smooth, not easy to deal with
Example:
New York is a very gritty city. There are lots of weird people and weird things going on.


press v.
Definition:
encourage strongly; almost force; apply pressure
Example:
I think if we press them, they will tell us the information we require.
 
 


sultry adj.
Definition:
hot, steamy; passionate, inspiring passion and sexual desire
Example:
In August, the weather in Tokyo is sultry and unbearable.


a gift certificate n.
Definition:
a paper that is worth money in the store that it is from
Example:
I'm going to give my mother a a gift certificate for her favorite store for Mother's Day.


fresh take n.
Definition:
when something old seems new again
Example:
I just reread American Psycho after seeing the movie and I had a totally fresh take. I think it's kind of a funny book now.


cycle v.
Definition:
go in circles, recur
Example:
Fashion seems to be on a cycle. Every few years bell-bottoms come back!


raunchy adj.
Definition:
dirty, vulgar
Example:
I like movies with sex scenes but not when they're too raunchy. That grosses me out.


vibe n.
Definition:
tone; aesthetic
Example:
Oddly enough, Spain sometimes has a similar vibe to California. The landscape is similar and people all wear giant sunglasses.

 
soul n.
Definition:
music related to African-American gospel singing and rhythm and blues
Example:
My dad loves soul music. He listens to Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin all the time.

Definition:
category; type; kind
Example:
My favorite musical genre is hip-hop.
