Bossa Nova是葡萄牙文，Bossa是双人舞曲的一种，Nova是新的意思，意味着一种崭新的音乐。50至60年代的巴西流行音乐风格，而在60年代由一批美国爵士乐手把它带进Jazz的家族之中，掀起了拉丁爵士乐风潮，风格兼具南美的浪漫激情和美国Cool派的清新散漫。
《The Girl From Ipanema》这首歌，有一段极其浪漫的真实故事。巴西的作曲家Jobim和Vinicius de Moraes在Ipanema海滩附近的Veloso露天酒吧，两人不约而同地看见一位青春活泼、古铜色皮肤的女孩，摇曳生姿地轻摆过他们眼前，然后消失在海滩的人群之中。灵感触发之下，便谱成了這首红遍全南美的《Garota de Ipanema》。有趣的是那家酒吧后来以这首名曲为店名，吸引了成千上万的观光客來造访。
