How to survive in college
Since I have been in college for all but two years, I would like to say, that the image of what I imagined the college life would be, is not so exciting or full of life, far from the paradise and never-land model that I’ve presumed during high school. Moreover, it appears to me a more atrocious and arduous circumstances, because most of the time you can merely count on yourself, without no other people voluntarily to come to give you a hand, and as a result, difficulties that you inevitably encounter and confront seem more horrible and invincible. However, this is just a single quarter of the college problems, and college life is so different from what it’s supposed to be in almost every aspect, that plenty of students get confused and lost, especially in study, relationship, recreation and mental problems. In consequence, whoever excels as a exquisite scheme maker in study, or good at intercourses and communications, or able to distribute time well between study and spare life, or capable to back up the spirits well when met with a failure or comfiture, will subsist and fare well in this very miniature of the dog eat dog society.
First, when it comes to study, there’s no doubt that it’s the principal thing that students are expected to do in college, so we should devote the most part of our time to it and spare no pains. Youths of our age are in the superb time to learn, for we now have good memories and enable to learn things swiftly and efficiently. Also do we possess abundant time and copious vigor and energy for toiling in the hard course, rarely with a family worry or money problem intruding. So what a humiliating if we just waste our time and pay little attention to our school work.
In my opinion, study is not that frightful. It is rather a source of joy than torment, from which, if a problem is finally worked out through a series of analyzing and calculating, satisfaction and ecstasy will spontaneously come up. As this rapture is gained continually, we will never be able to refrain ourselves from being attracted in this employment, and study will become part of us unconsciously.
And the most important part is to make ourselves a definite and decided aim to help study more efficiently, by virtue of finding and deciding what is our interest or abhorrence and which field we are going to plunge in or loathe being involved in. Once a study aim is established, study will come easier, because we can just focus on the chief line and need not to care too much for the other subjects. Whereupon, our time will be rearranged, and the most part is distributed to our chief subjects. And as time goes by, we receive more and more useful and special knowledge and information, which in return furnish a momentum to require more and pursue deeper.
Second, as for relationship, which involves us with the entire society, it is more complicated than study because the objects we are facing are all living persons, with sense and affection, not just a maths problem with a certain answer waiting there for us. A good relationship doesn’t come out just with one person’s contribution, but it is the result of bilateral devotion, hearty and altruistic. So when we tolerably sacrifice to a certain relationship, yet without a good result, it is not necessary to just bring ourselves to blame and attribute all the reasons to ourselves. Maybe the problem is chiefly due to the other one, if not completely; maybe he or she doesn’t want to keep the friendship, and so such a friendship rarely worths fighting for. So we needn’t torture or fret ourselves too much when a relationship goes to the end, and remember that a friend to everybody is a friend to nobody. To make dozens of friends not only costs a large amount of time and vigor and affection, but also results in shallow friendships, some of them but skin deep, no more than nodding friends. The proper attitude is to seek for someone with common interests, like characters, and the one with whom you really feel at home and who behaves more like a friend when you are thrown in trouble. Upon this point, I’m afraid that though hundreds of people go into and out of our life circle every day and night, no more than two or three person that you encounter will turn out to be that very kind. Apparently, we don’t necessarily fling too much time to deal with so many people, attempting to make ourselves welcome to everybody, and if so, we eventually become no more than a slave and a captive of the society. So what we should do is just to wait with sufficient patience and keen perception, for that right person, and ever when we do fall into that friendship, we should endeavor to the greatest extent to be sincere and genuine and straightforward to make sure the relationship goes along well.
Third, comes the recreation. Like most other students, this is exactly what I suppose college life ought to be in high school. To be honest, pleasure is really a very common employment, which human nature is prone to, and there are few of us who don’t feel like sparing time as much as possible to it. And as the economy is growing speedily and the living conditions improving swiftly, sometimes it surprises me a lot to realize that there are so many kinds of funs and divertments that men and women can hurl themselves into. PC games, for example, which are designed with beautiful pictures and luring plots, become so popular as the computers spread fast throughout the world, that many youths are attracted and addicted to them, hardly paying attentions to other concerns any more. That is the case. There are so many lures around us, but we just don’t calm down and look at them from another view, and even before an analysis or investigation is done, the impulse and curiosity within silently compel us into the endless sea, lost and never back again. Terrible as it is, yet we can still save ourselves by a composed mind, by a self-possession which will restrain ourselves from indulging in the inside desire. And always keep this word inside “Don’t bite at bait of pleasures until you are certain that there is no hook beneath it.”
Though there is a lot of pleasures we should not eat up with, there do exist some entertainments which we should take to soothe the tired mind and keep us in good conditions. For instance, sports like football, basketball, or so, they not only can do good to our health, but will refresh our mind as well as build a strong body. And films and music are also available. Sometimes, especially for boys, a little touch of PC games is tolerable, only if we can control ourselves well enough to be secure that when class time comes, we can immediately drop the game, and turn to classes. Actually, whatever forms of pleasure you are enjoying in, the first task is to make sure we will never addict to them and never deviate from the aim of study. If ever we are on the aberrance, we should instantly cease the pleasure, adjust ourselves, and buckle down to the main job again.
At length, comes the mental problem, which is the principal cause of sorrow and fidget of spirits for most students. It is certain that kinds of displeasures will step into our college life, especially when we break up with our dear girlfriend or boyfriend, or when the exam results come out bad though we struggle assiduously for it, or when occasionally some important articles such as a mobile or wallet with money and sorts of cards inside are lost. These incidents do throw us in bad mood. However, life is not all beer and skittles, and periods of dejection are not able to be shunned, if these things do take place and we don’t get away. Nothing we can do to change the result but take heart to face the crude truth, while remorse and depression only make us feel guiltier and restrain us from quickly recovering. Nonetheless, during frustration and gloomy period, a little time may be spared to nurse our distress and wounded soul, without caring for study or other necessary things. We can use this one day or two to think fully and clearly about what has happened, and what we shall do next step to adapt us to come back to the normal lifestyle. But we should never be haunted by this depression too long and forget our main course. In comparison with your life aim, this setback counts little, only a vain thing or a handicap in our struggle for development.
Above all, such is college life, full of confusion and puzzle. But nothing is impossible if we establish an aim, contrive a scheme, and fight for its accomplishment with heart and soul. As for other employments, they are not likewise important and indispensable, and just subordinate to study. Neither should an upset and agitated sentiment become an obstruct. If there are no clouds, we shall never enjoy the sun. Let’s just bathe in the soft college sunshine, and get down to work. And this is the absolute shortcut.
