How to Survive in College

“The survival in college” is a brand-new subject to freshmen and even still a headache to some sophomores. However, our world is undoubtedly governed by the rule that only the fittest survives. Therefore, we should do the utmost effort to cope with “freshmen stress” and fit in the college environment.

As the expense of an away-from-home college education is skyrocketing, financial problem has been becoming the greatest concern of students and their parents. Fortunately, there’re more possibilities for college students to solve this problem than ever before. You can apply for financial aids provided by colleges, banks and funds. And today’s students get easy access to relative part-time job information via internet and campus bulletin, you can try to do part-times to support yourself. More importantly, the working experience will broaden your horizon and make your resume attractive.

Generally speaking, study is the major part of college life. Every student should put concentration on learning and try to make some academic standing. However, college study is more or less different from high school study. As a result, freshmen are likely to meet troubles and feel stressed. Some of they have a sense of loss when finding they are not the best students as before. Typically, they also feel extremely nervous when answering questions in the class. Others have difficulties in adopting an effective way of study. Ask yourself what group of students you fall into and find the way out. For the former group, I have to point out that developing thinking skills overrides just getting a high score. In addition, finding your stage, either on study or in college social events and off-campus activities, is more important that just worrying your GPA and class performance. If you belong to the latter group, you’d better listen to other’s advice. Simply put, you can choose some methods recommended by successful students and your tutors and follow their suggestions for 3or 4 days each. Then you might be probably find the most suitable and effective way.

Many students undergo the so-called “freshman-stress”, largely because they feel uneasy and anxious in the new and unfamiliar surroundings. For example, you have strong southern accent. And people laugh at you the moment you open the mouth. In the case of dorm life, you have told yourself a thousand times that toleration is the best policy in the crowded room, but friction between you and your roommates still drive you crazy. Keep in mind , you are not helpless in the face of such problems. On one hand, you can communicate with your roommates and classmates, and learn the art of compromise. On the other hand, you can find opportunities to make new friends, say going to parties, participating in volunteer works and attending lectures. Then you will feel fellowship accompanies you and have a feeling of home. What’s more, you improve your social ability when dealing with such intercourse problems.

College is a milestone in your life. It opens a whole new world that you never image. You will experience a unique kind of intellectual excitement and camaraderie that you never have again in the “real world”. So cheer up now and make up your mind to clear all the obstacles to survive in college.
