A Typical Day at College

Li Yan

College-day is the last sanctuary from society, and it has both the tense and peaceful component.

"In the morning, when the moon is at its rest..."*
When the light is on at 6 o'clock, the college life begins. Some early birds get busy bathing and hurry to lessons or self-studying, and get all things up towards success, while some others would rather stay in beds, even when they have the first class. You may call the latter lazybones, but their preferring comfort to study may results from the boringness of the classes. Some of them are what we call "owls", whose energy only boils at night. To them, get up in the morning? No, the bed-time just begins. It's a way-of-life thing; no one has rights to blame them for that. I myself prefer to get up early and do some morning reading (except in winter), like English poems or essays. With the birds, flowers, wind breezes through the trees like an endless sea all around you --- what a shame to waste it!

"In the daytime, I will meet you as before..."*
All around the day, you can't see the study guys often outdoors. They take up almost every corner at classrooms or libraries. When you enter a room and see a pile of books without a person, you know the seat is reserved for them. They bring everything they need--- textbooks, exercise books, English reading materials, also some coffee, snacks, and magazines for amusement --- you know, they won’t go back to dorms until the very last minute. In their minds, even a second should not be wasted, and a moment’s laziness will pull them behind, which definitely balks the ways to their golden goals. On the contrary, the “some other guys” only study in some of the classes, and in the rest of time, they do their own things. They talk, laugh, stay with the one they love; they go back to dorm at noon to take a comfortable nap; they go shopping if an afternoon's agenda is empty; they look for as much fun as they can. Their motto is: the world is an amusement park; if you don't enjoy yourself today, you just waste your life. Both of these two kinds are a little excessive. Most of us pick a middle line between them. Study, good! But too much may isolate you from the real world. Play, not bad! But too much may numb your mind. We must learn to balance.

"In the evening, I will fly you to the moon..."*
When the sun softly kisses goodbye, and the night slowly draws the curtain, there begins our personal time! While the bookworms are still sailing in the sea of books, the funlovers ones are out for exciting night lives. The regular guy like me stay in "the sweet dorm", sitting before that square flashy screen, doing whatever we likes: games, movies, music, downloading, chatting, etc. The electro-technology revolution brings both convenience and sloth. The entertainment goes on until blackout. But, some use battery and emergency light to pull off the time of completely stagnancy, while most of us just dig into the warm beds, "where we'll stay until the sun shines another day..."*. Then another cycle runs.

College can be a paradise or a hell, depending on how you choose your lifestyle. The time is precious: it’s the last time we can learn casually, and also the last time we can play freely. Please be patient, study guys! We still have time, so enjoy your lives more; please be serious, play boys and girls! Learn some skills, for you still have to live your day. The minutes take so long to drift away in the morning of our lives, so carefully choose your ways!
