The Rewards of a Part-time Job

Although more and more Chinese college students take part-time jobs, the percentage is still lower compared with American college students. Most Chinese parents criticize this on the grounds that working part-tome tends to interfere with their studies, and that the little extra amount of money earned doesn't compensate for the fatigue incurred by working and studying at the same time. However, I have different opinions.
It is true that the money earned from part-time jobs is small, but it makes much difference as tuition fees and prices of books, not to mention the cost of living, are soaring by the day. With the money earned, students can buy books and go traveling at their own expense. Thus, they can help reduce the financial burden of their parents. It is one of the rewards of a part-time job.
What really counts is to learn the hardship of earning money. Chinese students are mostly only child in the family, and their demands are normally accommodated whatever they are. Part-tome jobs will teach them how hard it is to earn a little money and help them form a correct viewpoint of life.
Take myself for example, I have been teaching a middle school student English for almost a year. Although, most of the time, it is a quite boring task requiring your time, energy, and patience as well. It does change me a lot. I used to dissatisfy my life. So I was always complaining. However, now, I understand my parents more deeply. They are working at their best to afford my education and life expenses. Sometimes they must do something they do not like just as you do the teaching. I have no reason for endless complaining. I have to try my best on study.
Most importantly, doing part-tome job sharpens a young person’s social awareness. Through part-tome work, students will not only have a good understanding of society and prepare themselves psychologically for their future career and life, but gain much experience in dealing with realities and people of different kinds. If you just stay on campus day by day, year after year, you will never experience something unforgettable by yourself, and you will not be clear which kind of person the society requires you to be. Then you can easily find the goal for you to pursue, to make effort, to achieve. If you isolate yourself into the campus or even your dormitory, you may only live in a world you are imaging, comfortable but not real.
Apart from these, doing part-tome jobs can teach students to learn how to arrange their time properly and cultivate a sense of competition. All these can’t be bought by money. They are the rewards a part-time job can bring us. Working part-time is a rewarding experience----experience that will exert a profound influence on their personality, and experience that will benefit the students in their future career and even through the whole life.
