TAIWAN actor Takeshi Kaneshiro's (Jin Chengwu) is a hard man to gossip about. An internet search will tell you the basic facts: he's 178cm tall, weighs 70kg, is blood type O, enjoys basketball, golf, video games and comic books. You'll also find plenty of cool photos of him.
But you hardly find any gossip about him, even when his latest film "Perhaps Love" (Ruguo Ai) is catching attention as a contender for next year's best foreign language Oscar.
At last month's Venice International Film Festival, where stars take any chance to promote themselves, the 33-year-old refused all interviews, because they weren't part of his job in the contract.
This trademark low-profile, is probably his biggest charm.
"The less he talks about himself, the more I'm attracted to him," said 27-year-old Beijing girl Angela Liu, who is a loyal Kaneshiro fan. "To me, he's like a beautiful myth, displaying boyish naivete and mature macho charm".
Raised in Taipei by a Taiwanese mother and a Japanese father, he speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and a little English.
He was spotted by a Taiwan talent agency when aged 15 and started off as a singer. But, after releasing several albums in the early 1990s, he got tired of singing: "I tried to write songs and hoped that people would listen to what I did. But I find that it's not so much about what you write. It's more about...the package," he explains.
But his good looks quickly got him acting jobs. From the love-struck cop in Wong Kar-wai's (Wang Jiawei) "Chungking Express" (Chongqing Senlin) to the sword-waving hero in Zhang Yimou's "House of Flying Daggers" (Shimian Maifu), he avoids being packaged as just a pretty boy. "I think it's all about creation. Whether you're writing a song or acting in a film it's all about the process of creating something."
