人生苦短理当及时行乐,但是,生活上的诸多事物却常教人触景生情,对于在洛杉矶圣法兰多山谷地区长大的John Ondrasik而言,他就希望能结合一群音乐人与非音乐人的力量热情地去实践歌曲与意念的真谛,于是他就以Five For Fighting作为笔名/艺名,融合自己身为钢琴家/讽刺作家/时事评论家的多重身分,藉着Five For Fighting(*原是曲棍球罚则,指的是被罚下场五分钟等候再度上场的球员)隐喻挑战音乐工业这只庞然巨兽,努力地让别人听见自己的歌曲,却能依然保有不平凡与诚实的精神,同时也是Ondrasik抒怀、呐喊与谴责态度的表征。
首张专辑American Town就是Ondrasik看待美国大环境的人文风采的心情随笔唱作,碰触快乐、寂寞、绝望、希望、困惑与英雄主义等心理层面,在钢琴与人声浑然天成的和谐感里,兼具抒情小品的人文风采与悦耳动容的特质,发扬了如Carole King、Billy Joel、Counting Crows、Elliott Smith流派词简情深的唱作神采,拥有加州大学洛杉矶分校应用数学的学士学位,更让Ondrasik培养出凡事分析的性格,这样的背景让Five For Fighting的唱作能够不经意的解析微妙的情感,部分歌曲力邀Goo Goo Dolls、Beck混音高手Jack Joseph Puig捉刀,荣获Billboard 抒情榜冠军并入围葛莱美奖最佳流行乐团的”Superman”就以家喻户晓的超人带出人们一方面希望自己无所不能但却又无所适从的茫然与矛盾,”Michael Jordan”以篮球英雄麦可乔登直扣盲目的偶像崇拜心理, “Bloody Mary (A Note On Apathy)”以血腥玛丽暗喻世间的冷漠,而在具有摇滚情歌形式的”Easy Tonight”中大声疾呼反对自杀的见解,”Love Song”藉由小孩观点探究离婚议题,带点美国内战时期阿帕拉契山区编曲调调的”The Last Great American”是一则关于一个宁愿被活埋也不愿活在自己所厌恶的世界的讽刺寓言,”America Town”则是哀叹美国近年来逐渐蔚为风尚的谎言文化。
