考研作文讲座
曹其军
曹说：考场作文通常是写成三段（四段当然也可以，不过一般情况下三段比较合适）。但
是从改卷老师的角度，这三段份量是不同的。一般看到第一段，印象分就已经下来了，所
以第一段很关键。第二段老师一般不看，即便看也只是看有没有明显的病句。然后会着重
再看一下第三段。从上面可以看出来，第一段跟第三段是关键，有什么特殊的优美的句子
尽管用，长难句最好。但是第二段要用短句而不要用长句（！！！切记），因为长句容易
出错。
所以曹的作文着重讲的就是第一段跟第三段如何写。至于第二段，自己发挥去。
我会把去年的一些笔记（很可惜大部分记在笔记本上丢了仅剩下记在讲义上的一些残余）
一起写出来。并且加上脚注。黑体表示一个字都不能改，就照单背下。斜体表示可以改的地方。
曹的作文一共分成八个MODEL，下面是Model 1，在看完model后最好背下来，然后完成
后面的application，做一两篇熟悉一下。
MODEL 1 Poblem-Solution（问题以及问题的解决）

As can be easily observed from the cartoon, intellectuals of middle agg in our country are
making great contributions, but they also suffer from the poor working and living conditions.
Just take a look at the man in the picture. Under the dim light, he is bent on his study while
taking food. He is thin and the bottles of medicine on the table show that he is very poor in health.
From the picture, it is obvious that the issue of intellectuals' treatment has really become more
and more serious.
This problem may arise from the following factors. To begin with, there is often a shortage of investment on scientific study. According to a recently published report from the State Council（国务院）, only 3% of the total GDP was invested in the development of science and technology last year. The report also predicts that future investment will most probably remain unchanged. Consequently, the shortage of fund has a direct impact upon intellectuals' work and health. In the second place, though the central government（中央政府） has made various policies to improve intellectures' conditions, some local governments won't implement these policies effectively. Sometimes these governments even intentionally pay no attention to the requests by intellectuals. Last but not the least, most of the intellectuals ignore the importance of sports and outdoor activities. This also gives rise to their poor health and less efficient work.
The current situation calls for an immediate solution indeed. In my opinion, both the government and the intellectuals should play their role. On one hand, the government should grant more funds to intellectuals. On the other hand, intellectuals should be aware of the importance of their health, and try every means to build up their health. Only in these co-operative efforts, I believe , will the problem be efficiently resolved.
第一段提出问题，这个是个sample是个漫画式作文，但是可以归到model 1里面。注意一下 ，该漫画对第二，三两段没有任何响，象第二段的According to 之类的废话，不要迟疑
，背下来。

Nowadays one of the fundamental problems China is faced with is the increasing illiteracy（可改成sociological,environmental等根据topic） among the adolescents. According to a recent survey made by Dr. Wang, head of educational department of Beijing University, about 24% of the children between 8 to 15 years old have dropped out of school across the country. The same survey also shows that the number of drop-outs is likely to grow in the years to come. Therefore, it is very clear that illiteracy has been getting more and more serious.（只有serious了才能体现其紧迫感重要性）
To account for illiteracy, people have come up with various causes as demonstrated below. For one thing, many families are still too poor to afford schooling for their kids. Take my neighbor as an example（或者A good case in point is my neighbour）. There are five members and four adults were laid off（下岗符合国情） last year. Then life gets very hard for them. Finally, the only child has to leave the school. Actually, poverty is always the major factor behind illiteracy in China. On the other hand, some parents believe that schooling is useless, particularly for girls. They often force their kids to leave school and send them to work.. In the end, some students are bored of the school life, and they drop out to escape teachers and school lesson.
Whatever the reason, the issue has turned a crippling（造成重大损害的）force to the development of our country. Therefore, some measures should be taken to put an end to this problem. On one hand, our government should make stricter law to forbid parents to take kids away from school. In addition, more funds should be put in to the help of those poor students. On the other hand, we should launch a publicizing campaign（群众运动，具有中国特色，一定要写） to enhance people's awareness of the harmfulness of illiteracy to our economy and life. Only through these attempts can we hope to solve the problem.
这个model我极其喜爱，因为我考研就是套这个model的，虽然我写完后都不知道写什么意
思，但是还是得到了一个比较高的分数。第一段提出了问题，就是中国的文盲问题。第二
段分析现象，产生原因。大家千万不要小看了Take my neighbor as an example这句话，
是举出证据支持论点，不论什么事情，都说你的neighbor，比方说爱滋病问题，你就说邻
居家有人得了爱滋病，比方说下岗，就说邻居家全部下岗生不如死。再注意一下poverty
is always the major factor behind ，这里是原因前结果后的句子，背。
第三段极力推荐背下来，第一句中的reason，如果是说“结果”则要换成consequence；最
后的country可以换成society，life，world之类的词语。第一句起到承上启下的作用，优
美，背。群众运动不能忘记，否则文革怎么产生，要发动群众运动去enhance people's a
wareness增强民众的觉悟，重要，背。最后一句倒装句保证让老师对你的印象更好。

According to a recent poll made by Beijing Youth Daily, a local newspaper, about 87 percent of the residents have a good understanding of the census, and they are very cooperative（支持）with it. The same survey also shows that more
people are concerned about the result of the census. It can be easily concluded, therefore, that the census has become an important issue in our life.
Its importance may be demonstrated in two ways as follow. To begin with, the census is directly related to the society in general. On one hand, our country has long carried out the policy of birth control, and regular census may help us get a better idea of our population growth. On the other hand, with the reform and opening-up, there has been a widespread mass migration movement. Many farmers leave their home villages to seek job in the cities. 了出来，跟model 1 的北大教授一样，这是给人权威的说法。咱们是小人物阿说话不顶
事，但是权威人物或者正式刊物可就不一样了。 be cooperative with 支持，既然是好
的东西公众自然都要支持了，不支持就罚你的款^_^。
第二段是垃圾自己去编，在分析好的时候提供如下建议，分析其对社会好，对生活
好，对身体好。
看第三段，due attention，应有的重视，很少人能想到这个词吧。the general
public should offer a helping hand whenever necessary，对于老百姓来说，该出手
时候就出手，决不能迟疑。最后提到As for myself，对于我们这样的小人物，所能做的
唯一的事情，就是参与宣传活动。

As shown in the graph, it can be easily concluded that the past twenty years have witnessed some ups and downs in China's growth rate whereas there has been a steady increase in the amount of GDP. According to the statistics published by the State Bureau of Statistics in 1978, China's GDP was 362.4 billion in Renminbi, and it grew to be 7477.2 billion in 1997,almost 27 times higher. From the graph, it can also be predicted that China's GDP will continue to increase in the future while its growth rate remains steady.
This tendency of GDP increase may be attributed to the following reasons. First of all, with the improvement of people's living standard, there will be a greater demand for goods and services of all kinds. A good case in point is the Internet. As it comes into our daily life, people need more information and better services. There will provide and incentive for further development in computer technology and manpower. What's more, in terms of production, China will need to build more roads, railways, and power stations in order to become stronger. More natural resources need to be exploited and used for the benefit of people. Last but not the least, China's entry into WTO will greatly improve the export environment of international trade. 注意哦，考场上***不准写比较结构***，太容易出错了！！！上面这篇范文，就提
到了比较级的用法。look，要用就用这种简单明了不会出错的比较级用法，列举出前后
的数据，然后说“almost xx times higher”。
看第一句哦，the past twenty years have witnessed，这是一种表示被动的说法
，根据时间段。in China's growth中in用来表示该文主题。还有个很优美的形容词stea
dy，如果是大起大落要用sharp哦。increase表示增加，如果图中是下落就要用fall或者
decrease。 grew to be 如果是下降要改成dropped to be。
本文的第三段可写可不写，都是垃圾，不过为了凑段数凑字数还是要写的拉hiahia

As we all know, honesty is the best policy. This is an accumulated experience we inherit from our forefathers, and now it is still widely applied to our daily life.
To illustrate the point, let me cite a case of Nokia, a mobile phone manufac turer. In the very beginning, it had the largest marker share in China. According to an official publication released in July 1999, about 47 percent of mobile phone users expressed their preference for Nokia, while only 16 percent liked Motorola, Nokia's major competitor. Nowadays tuition and fees for college are much higher than ever before. How to finance one’s college education has become a matter of great concern for many people, particularly the young students and their family. Actually just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, so it seems we can deal with tuition and fees in many ways. Some can get all the needed money from their parents. Some others can apply for a loan specially set up for college students. Still others can also raise the money completely by themselves, by doing s full-time job in the summer and winter holidays. Or even others can ask their parents to provide the greater part and earn the rest in their spare time by doing a part-time job.
In my opinion, the last method may prove to be quite beneficial in many respects. Having obtained most of the tuition and fees from one’s parents, one needn’t w worry too much about the money and can concentrate on his studies. After all, it is the duty of any college student to study hard and well. On the other hand, a part-time job in one’s spare time will enrich his campus life. As regards the farmer migration into the cities, there has been a heated discussion among the general public in our society. People who believe in the beneficial side of such migration may have some arguments as follows. To begin with, farmers can earn more money by finding jobs in the cities. Most of them will send part of their income back home to their family. This in turn helps expand the economy of the countryside. What’s more, these farmers also help develop the cities in many ways. According to a recent survey as published in the newspaper, most of the construction projects in Beijing are actually done by farmers.
In contrast, some people think that farmer migration may give rise to（导致） a series of negative effects as well. They argue that, on one hand, it stands for the government’s determination to open China further to the world. In so doing, the ordinary people can benefit the most. In this argument, the author concludes that… To support his conclusion,
the author points out that…. In addition, the author reasons that…
Further more, he also assumes that … . At first glance, the author’s
argument appears to be somehow appealing, while a close examination will
reveal how groundless it is. We do not have to look very far to see the
invalidity of this argument. This argument is problematic for the following
reasons.
In the first place, this argument rests on a gratuitous assumption that ….
The author unfairly assumes that…. However, the assumption is questionable
because the author provides no evidence to support this argument. The
arguer fails to take into account other facts that might contribute to the
result that …….. It is likely that , ……………..; it is also likely that
………………………… Any of these scenarios, if true, would show that
…………………..
Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.
In the second place, the argument commits a logic fallacy of “after this
and therefore because of this”. In no case can the mere fact that… be
cited as evidence to support the assumption that there is a causal-effect
relationship between A and B. Moreover, that just because B can be
statistically correlated with A does not necessarily mean that A is the
cause of B. In fact, the author has obviously neglected the possibility of
other alternative facts such as…, or … may contribute to a certain extent
to B. It may be only a coincidence that …… . Unless the author can rule
out other factors relevant to …, this assumption in question can not be
accepted.
In the third place, the evidence that the author provides is insufficient
to support the conclusion drawn from it. One example is rarely sufficient
to establish a general conclusion. Unless the arguer can show that A1 is
representative of all A, the conclusion that B… is completely unwarranted.
In fact, in face of such limited evidence, it is fallacious to draw any
conclusion at all.
In the fourth place, the argument has also committed a false analogy
fallacy. The argument rests on the assumption that A is analogous to B in
all respects, and the author assumes without justification that all things
are equal, and that the background conditions have remained the same at
different times or at different locations. There is, however, no guarantee
that this is the case. Nor does the author cite any evidence to support
this assumption. Lacking this assumption, the conclusion that … is
entirely unfounded. In fact, it is highly doubtful that the facts drawn
from B are applicable to A. Differences between A and B clearly out weight
the similarities, thus making the analogy highly less than valid. For
example, A..., however, B.... Thus, it is likely much more difficult for B
to do....
In addition, the conclusion unjustifiably relies on the poll while the
validity of the survey itself is doubtful. The poll cited by the author is
too vague to be informative. The claim does not indicate who, when, how and
by whom the survey is conducted, neither does it mention what is the sample
size, or how the samples are selected. Until these questions are answered
the results are worthless as evidence to support that….
Besides, the author assumes that A and B are mutually exclusive
alternatives. However, the author has never offered any reasons or
evidences for imposing an either/or choice. Common sense and observation
tells us that adjoining both A and B might produce better results.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in
the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author claims. To
make the argument more convincing concerning…. , the arguer would have to
provide more information that………………. The arguer should also
demonstrate that……………….to make this argument logically acceptable.
Since the author commits the above mentioned logical mistakes and fails to
consider the whole situation comprehensively, his ideas should not be
adopted. The conclusion would be strengthened if he….

考研作文一：
考研作文讲座
曹其军
曹说：考场作文通常是写成三段（四段当然也可以，不过一般情况下三段比较合适）。但
是从改卷老师的角度，这三段份量是不同的。一般看到第一段，印象分就已经下来了，所
以第一段很关键。第二段老师一般不看，即便看也只是看有没有明显的病句。然后会着重
再看一下第三段。从上面可以看出来，第一段跟第三段是关键，有什么特殊的优美的句子
尽管用，长难句最好。但是第二段要用短句而不要用长句（！！！切记），因为长句容易
出错。
所以曹的作文着重讲的就是第一段跟第三段如何写。至于第二段，自己发挥去。
我会把去年的一些笔记（很可惜大部分记在笔记本上丢了仅剩下记在讲义上的一些残余）
一起写出来。并且加上脚注。黑体表示一个字都不能改，就照单背下。斜体表示可以改的地方。
曹的作文一共分成八个MODEL，下面是Model 1，在看完model后最好背下来，然后完成
后面的application，做一两篇熟悉一下。
MODEL 1 Poblem-Solution（问题以及问题的解决）

As can be easily observed from the cartoon, intellectuals of middle agg in our country are
making great contributions, but they also suffer from the poor working and living conditions.
Just take a look at the man in the picture. Under the dim light, he is bent on his study while
taking food. He is thin and the bottles of medicine on the table show that he is very poor in health.
From the picture, it is obvious that the issue of intellectuals' treatment has really become more
and more serious.
This problem may arise from the following factors. To begin with, there is often a shortage of investment on scientific study. According to a recently published report from the State Council（国务院）, only 3% of the total GDP was invested in the development of science and technology last year. The report also predicts that future investment will most probably remain unchanged. Consequently, the shortage of fund has a direct impact upon intellectuals' work and health. In the second place, though the central government（中央政府） has made various policies to improve intellectures' conditions, some local governments won't implement these policies effectively. Sometimes these governments even intentionally pay no attention to the requests by intellectuals. Last but not the least, most of the intellectuals ignore the importance of sports and outdoor activities. This also gives rise to their poor health and less efficient work.
The current situation calls for an immediate solution indeed. In my opinion, both the government and the intellectuals should play their role. On one hand, the government should grant more funds to intellectuals. On the other hand, intellectuals should be aware of the importance of their health, and try every means to build up their health. Only in these co-operative efforts, I believe , will the problem be efficiently resolved.
第一段提出问题，这个是个sample是个漫画式作文，但是可以归到model 1里面。注意一下 ，该漫画对第二，三两段没有任何响，象第二段的According to 之类的废话，不要迟疑

Nowadays one of the fundamental problems China is faced with is the increasing illiteracy（可改成sociological,environmental等根据topic） among the adolescents. According to a recent survey made by Dr. Wang, head of educational department of Beijing University, about 24% of the children between 8 to 15 years old have dropped out of school across the country. The same survey also shows that the number of drop-outs is likely to grow in the years to come. Therefore, it is very clear that illiteracy has been getting more and more serious.（只有serious了才能体现其紧迫感重要性）
To account for illiteracy, people have come up with various causes as demonstrated below. For one thing, many families are still too poor to afford schooling for their kids. Take my neighbor as an example（或者A good case in point is my neighbour）. There are five members and four adults were laid off（下岗符合国情） last year. Then life gets very hard for them. Finally, the only child has to leave the school. Actually, poverty is always the major factor behind illiteracy in China. On the other hand, some parents believe that schooling is useless, particularly for girls. They often force their kids to leave school and send them to work.. In the end, some students are bored of the school life, and they drop out to escape teachers and school lesson.
Whatever the reason, the issue has turned a crippling（造成重大损害的）force to the development of our country. Therefore, some measures should be taken to put an end to this problem. On one hand, our government should make stricter law to forbid parents to take kids away from school. In addition, more funds should be put in to the help of those poor students. On the other hand, we should launch a publicizing campaign（群众运动，具有中国特色，一定要写） to enhance people's awareness of the harmfulness of illiteracy to our economy and life. Only through these attempts can we hope to solve the problem.
这个model我极其喜爱，因为我考研就是套这个model的，虽然我写完后都不知道写什么意
思，但是还是得到了一个比较高的分数。第一段提出了问题，就是中国的文盲问题。第二
段分析现象，产生原因。大家千万不要小看了Take my neighbor as an example这句话，
是举出证据支持论点，不论什么事情，都说你的neighbor，比方说爱滋病问题，你就说邻
居家有人得了爱滋病，比方说下岗，就说邻居家全部下岗生不如死。再注意一下poverty
is always the major factor behind ，这里是原因前结果后的句子，背。
第三段极力推荐背下来，第一句中的reason，如果是说“结果”则要换成consequence；最
后的country可以换成society，life，world之类的词语。第一句起到承上启下的作用，优
美，背。群众运动不能忘记，否则文革怎么产生，要发动群众运动去enhance people's a
wareness增强民众的觉悟，重要，背。最后一句倒装句保证让老师对你的印象更好。

There has been a growing concern among the general public over the population census which is now being conducted in our country. According to a recent poll made by Beijing Youth Daily, a local newspaper, about 87 percent of the residents have a good understanding of the census, and they are very cooperative（支持）with it. The same survey also shows that more
people are concerned about the result of the census. It can be easily concluded, therefore, that the census has become an important issue in our life.
Its importance may be demonstrated in two ways as follow. To begin with, the census is directly related to the society in general. On one hand, our country has long carried out the policy of birth control, and regular census may help us get a better idea of our population growth. On the other hand, with the reform and opening-up, there has been a widespread mass migration movement. Many farmers leave their home villages to seek job in the cities. 了出来，跟model 1 的北大教授一样，这是给人权威的说法。咱们是小人物阿说话不顶
事，但是权威人物或者正式刊物可就不一样了。 be cooperative with 支持，既然是好
的东西公众自然都要支持了，不支持就罚你的款^_^。
第二段是垃圾自己去编，在分析好的时候提供如下建议，分析其对社会好，对生活
好，对身体好。
看第三段，due attention，应有的重视，很少人能想到这个词吧。the general
public should offer a helping hand whenever necessary，对于老百姓来说，该出手
时候就出手，决不能迟疑。最后提到As for myself，对于我们这样的小人物，所能做的
唯一的事情，就是参与宣传活动。

As shown in the graph, it can be easily concluded that the past twenty years have witnessed some ups and downs in China's growth rate whereas there has been a steady increase in the amount of GDP. According to the statistics published by the State Bureau of Statistics in 1978, China's GDP was 362.4 billion in Renminbi, and it grew to be 7477.2 billion in 1997,almost 27 times higher. From the graph, it can also be predicted that China's GDP will continue to increase in the future while its growth rate remains steady.
This tendency of GDP increase may be attributed to the following reasons. First of all, with the improvement of people's living standard, there will be a greater demand for goods and services of all kinds. A good case in point is the Internet. As it comes into our daily life, people need more information and better services. There will provide and incentive for further development in computer technology and manpower. More natural resources need to be exploited and used for the benefit of people. Last but not the least, China's entry into WTO will greatly improve the export environment of international trade. 注意哦，考场上***不准写比较结构***，太容易出错了！！！上面这篇范文，就提
到了比较级的用法。look，要用就用这种简单明了不会出错的比较级用法，列举出前后
的数据，然后说“almost xx times higher”。
看第一句哦，the past twenty years have witnessed，这是一种表示被动的说法
，根据时间段。in China's growth中in用来表示该文主题。还有个很优美的形容词stea
dy，如果是大起大落要用sharp哦。increase表示增加，如果图中是下落就要用fall或者
decrease。 grew to be 如果是下降要改成dropped to be。
本文的第三段可写可不写，都是垃圾，不过为了凑段数凑字数还是要写的拉hiahia

As we all know, honesty is the best policy. This is an accumulated experience we inherit from our forefathers, and now it is still widely applied to our daily life.
To illustrate the point, let me cite a case of Nokia, a mobile phone manufac turer. In the very beginning, it had the largest marker share in China. According to an official publication released in July 1999, about 47 percent of mobile phone users expressed their preference for Nokia, while only 16 percent liked Motorola, Nokia's major competitor. Nowadays tuition and fees for college are much higher than ever before. How to finance one’s college education has become a matter of great concern for many people, particularly the young students and their family. Actually just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, so it seems we can deal with tuition and fees in many ways. Some can get all the needed money from their parents. Some others can apply for a loan specially set up for college students. Still others can also raise the money completely by themselves, by doing s full-time job in the summer and winter holidays. Or even others can ask their parents to provide the greater part and earn the rest in their spare time by doing a part-time job.
In my opinion, the last method may prove to be quite beneficial in many respects. Having obtained most of the tuition and fees from one’s parents, one needn’t w worry too much about the money and can concentrate on his studies. After all, it is the duty of any college student to study hard and well. On the other hand, a part-time job in one’s spare time will enrich his campus life. Through the part-time job one can make a lot of friends, improve one’s social skills and learn many practical things. Therefore, I would choose this way, if possible, to cover my tuition and fees.

People who believe in the beneficial side of such migration may have some arguments as follows. To begin with, farmers can earn more money by finding jobs in the cities. Most of them will send part of their income back home to their family. This in turn helps expand the economy of the countryside. What’s more, these farmers also help develop the cities in many ways. According to a recent survey as published in the newspaper, most of the construction projects in Beijing are actually done by farmers.

As is fairly well-known to anyone, particularly the young, Recommendation Admission System has been in practice in China over the past 20 years. There is no denying that the System has benefited a large number of senior middle school graduates. But in my point of view, the System does more harm and should be completely denied as soon as possible.
In support of my view, the very first point I would like to touch upon is concerned with equality among the candidates, which I regard as a basic right to each student. The System offers opportunity to quite a few lucky ones while the majority of students have to compete fiercely for this opportunity. As it is, most candidates are actually discriminated against in one way or the other. What’s more, the System often works in the interest of those people who can manage to get favorable recommendation from the senior middle school. There are already quite a few reports in various media of such abuse of the System. Ss a result, the System can not ensure that the most outstanding students are admitted. To make things worse, the whole society may lose its confidence in this test system.
Accordingly, I strongly believe it meaningful and significant to suspend the Recommendation Admission System. It is also my hope that every candidate can realize his dream through equal competition.

As required I chose 500 middle class subjects and asked them, through telephone, about what they thought about the recent entry of China into WTO. Here is what I get from the survey.
For the majority of people(about 56% of the total), this entry into WTO is a great success both nationally and internationally. They argue that, on one hand, it stands for the government’s determination to open China further to the world. In so doing, the ordinary people can benefit the most. On the other hand, they also believe that WTO needs China, for it is well known that China, with the largest population, is quickly becoming the largest market on the globe.
A smaller group of subjects(about 35% of the total) remain suspicious, or pessimistic, of the event. They express deep concern for the future of China’s nationalized enterprises. For them, foreign competitors would certainly destroy domestic products and service system. Besides, they hold that there will be millions of unemployment.
Still about 9% of the respondents show no interest in the topic, and they seem to be wholly ignorant of the matter. When the event was explained, they replied that it has nothing to do with them or their life.

Recently there is a debate over whether …..Some people assert that..,
while other people believe that…As a matter of fact, the issue of whether
….. is a complex and controversial one. Different people hold different
views due to their distinct backgrounds. Therefore, there is not a
universal answer to this question, and whether one choice takes precedence
over the other may quite depend on the specific situation. The decision,
nevertheless, is not an easy one to make. Actually, the final judgment
should rely on a case-by-case analysis. As far as I am concerned, however,
I agree that …. , and do not agree that….. My view can be greatly
substantiated by the following discussions.
The first argument that can be presented to develop my position is that… A
good example may be found in the case that… Under this circumstance, it is
obvious that….
In addition, there is another reason for me to choose this statement. The
reason is not far to seek…. To illustrate, let us consider that … Hence,
another equally important aspect is that….
Admittedly, it may be true that …. in some conditions. However, this alone
does not constitute a sufficient support to claim that ….,Actually, these
cases are rare and therefore are too specific and too weak to strengthen
the view that…When the advantages and disadvantages of x and y are
carefully examined, the most striking conclusion is obvious that…
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes correlate
with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more
convincing than any single one of them, we may be comfortable to say that
…., because….
In this argument, the author concludes that… To support his conclusion,
the author points out that…. In addition, the author reasons that…
Further more, he also assumes that … . At first glance, the author’s
argument appears to be somehow appealing, while a close examination will
reveal how groundless it is. We do not have to look very far to see the
invalidity of this argument. This argument is problematic for the following
reasons.
In the first place, this argument rests on a gratuitous assumption that ….
The author unfairly assumes that…. However, the assumption is questionable
because the author provides no evidence to support this argument. The
arguer fails to take into account other facts that might contribute to the
result that …….. It is likely that , ……………..; it is also likely that
………………………… Any of these scenarios, if true, would show that
…………………..
Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.
In the second place, the argument commits a logic fallacy of “after this
and therefore because of this”. In no case can the mere fact that… be
cited as evidence to support the assumption that there is a causal-effect
relationship between A and B. Moreover, that just because B can be
statistically correlated with A does not necessarily mean that A is the
cause of B. In fact, the author has obviously neglected the possibility of
other alternative facts such as…, or … may contribute to a certain extent
to B. It may be only a coincidence that …… . Unless the author can rule
out other factors relevant to …, this assumption in question can not be
accepted.
In the third place, the evidence that the author provides is insufficient
to support the conclusion drawn from it. One example is rarely sufficient
to establish a general conclusion. Unless the arguer can show that A1 is
representative of all A, the conclusion that B… is completely unwarranted.
In fact, in face of such limited evidence, it is fallacious to draw any
conclusion at all.
In the fourth place, the argument has also committed a false analogy
fallacy. The argument rests on the assumption that A is analogous to B in
all respects, and the author assumes without justification that all things
are equal, and that the background conditions have remained the same at
different times or at different locations. There is, however, no guarantee
that this is the case. Nor does the author cite any evidence to support
this assumption. Lacking this assumption, the conclusion that … is
entirely unfounded. In fact, it is highly doubtful that the facts drawn
from B are applicable to A. Differences between A and B clearly out weight
the similarities, thus making the analogy highly less than valid. For
example, A..., however, B.... Thus, it is likely much more difficult for B
to do....
In addition, the conclusion unjustifiably relies on the poll while the
validity of the survey itself is doubtful. The poll cited by the author is
too vague to be informative. The claim does not indicate who, when, how and
by whom the survey is conducted, neither does it mention what is the sample
size, or how the samples are selected. Until these questions are answered
the results are worthless as evidence to support that….
Besides, the author assumes that A and B are mutually exclusive
alternatives. However, the author has never offered any reasons or
evidences for imposing an either/or choice. Common sense and observation
tells us that adjoining both A and B might produce better results.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in
the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author claims. To
make the argument more convincing concerning…. , the arguer would have to
provide more information that………………. The arguer should also
demonstrate that……………….to make this argument logically acceptable.
Since the author commits the above mentioned logical mistakes and fails to
consider the whole situation comprehensively, his ideas should not be
adopted. The conclusion would be strengthened if he….
In conclusion, the arguer fails to substantiate his claim that …. Because
the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the
arguer claims. To strengthen the argument, the arguer must convince us
that…. In addition, the arguer could have to provide more precise
information to support his claim.
It is entirely possible that management has become lax regarding any number
of factors that can affect the bottom line such as inferior products,
careless product pricing, inefficient production, poor employee expense
monitoring, ineffective advertising, sloppy buying policies and other
wasteful spending
