The region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter (centered around 2.8 AU) in which most asteroids are found. The asteroid belt contains a number of "gaps," the most prominent of which are the Kirkwood gaps, in which no asteroids are found. These gaps result from gravitational interactions with the planets. The total mass contained in the astroid belt is estimated at . It contains 230 objects with diameter greater than 100 km.
