| The most common form of calcium carbonate: CaCO3. The mineral aragonite has the same chemical composition, but a different crystal structure.
Calcite has been known for its property of birefringence. A light beam entering a calcite crystal is split into two separate rays travelling at different speeds, so that an image viewed through a plate of calcite (which is cut along the proper axes) will appear as a double image.
