A group of trioctahedral minerals with the composition Mg6(Si4O10)(OH)8 and 7 Å repeat distances. The serpentine group includes antigorite, chrysotile (which is natural white asbestos), and lizardite. Chrysotile asbestos exhibits a curious structure in which layers actually curl up, yielding the mineral's fibrous nature.
