A class of mineral with the general structure X3Y2(ZO4)3, where Z = Si (for the silicate garnet group), Y = Al, Cr, Mn+3, Fe+3, V+3, and X = Mn, Mg, Fe+2, and Ca. Naturally occurring garnets fall along the Mg-Fe and Fe-Mn edges of the triangular composition diagram. The silicon tetrahedra are isolated in garnet, making it an orthosilicate mineral. The garnet can incorporate almost any size element because of the different sized sites.
