An element which has an unusual phase diagram in that like Bi, Sb, and water, Ga expands upon solidification. In addition, gallium (which has atomic number 31) has a valence of , and is useful in electronics as part of the compound gallium-arsenide (GaAs). Devices made of GaAs generally have faster switching speeds than those made of doped silicon.
