A sporadic optical high-altitude conical emission which occurs between the tops of some thunder clouds and the ionosphere. They were first reported by Wescott et al. (1995), although they had previously been reported by airline pilots. They are conical emissions at heights of about 40-50 km which persist for about 300 ms. The mechanism for generating blue jets is not understood.
