The region of the Earth's upper atmosphere in which the mean free path equals the pressure scale height. In the exosphere, atoms execute ballistic orbits, but seldom undergo collisions. The concept of the exosphere was first introduced by G. J. Stoney in 1868. The exosphere extends from approximately 500 km upwards.
