此句出自迈克尔·德雷顿（Michael Drayton）的诗作《爱的告别》（Love's Farewell）。
迈克尔·德雷顿（1563–1631），英国诗人和剧作家，著有十四行诗、颂歌、田园诗、历史叙事诗和剧本等。
此诗发表于1619年，以中世纪寓言手法，将“爱”拟人化，寓意纯洁崇高的爱是不可能终止的，是无法告别的，即使爱已经濒临死亡，只要被爱者吐露一丝怜悯，垂死的爱便会重生。引用在这里，其实正好暗合奥兰多的谅解可以让他们的爱失而复得。

罗杰·麦高（1937——），一个特立独行的英国诗人，写的诗辛辣好笑，隐喻极多。
依然没有译文，但的确是很有趣的诗。写一对刚结婚的夫妇成天恩恩爱爱，粘在床上，走廊里堆积的奶瓶都有十个了也不来取，牛奶都变成了奶酪，邻居们也在探头探脑，疑神疑鬼。哈哈，不得不说，这状态和文中的VO成天粘在一起很像啊XD

这是引用莎士比亚《十四行诗集》的第106首《过往世代的记载里》（when in the chronicle of wasted time）。
我当然把引用这诗理解为是对奥兰多美貌的夸赞，以及寓意维戈对奥兰多的一见钟情。大师的手笔就是不一样啊，把美貌夸到天上去了还一点不让人觉得肉麻。
这诗有诸多译本，再附上一个梁宗岱的译本：
当我从那湮远的古代的纪年
发见那绝代风流人物的写真，
艳色使得古老的歌咏也香艳，
颂赞着多情骑士和绝命佳人，
于是，从那些国色天姿的描画，
无论手脚、嘴唇、或眼睛或眉额，
