1. WHERE TO LIVE –IN THE CITY OR THE COUNTRY
Many people appreciate the conveniences of the city. The city has better transportation service and health care. City dweller can easily enjoy themselves in restaurants, department stores and concert halls. They are well-informed about what is going on at home and abroad, and have the access to better education, better jobs and more opportunities for business.
But country life is also attractive. With the fresh air, the green trees and the singing birds, country people are close to nature and live a quiet life. They can make friends with simple and honest men or wander about leisurely without any pressure upon their mind.
Both the country and the city, however, have their own disadvantages. In the country, educational facilities, medical services and transportation systems are still not fully developed. And the city also has many problems, such as heavy traffic, air pollution, great noise and poor housing conditions.
As far as I'm concerned, I hate the terrible dirt and noise in the city. So, given the chance, I would prefer to live peacefully in the country.
2. FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN PARENT AND CHILD
Nowadays there is often a lack of understanding between parent and child. Parent often complain about their children's "unreasonable"behavior, while children usually think their parents too "old-fashioned". Then, when a child has a problem, he usually goes to his intimate friends for sympathy and advice, leaving his parents totally in the dark.
There are some possible reasons for the present situation. First, the two generations, having grown up at different times, have different likes and dislikes for the things around them and thus have little in common to talk about. Second, parents and children, due to the misunderstanding between them, may even feel it uncomfortable to sit face with each other talking. Finally, with the pace of modern life becoming faster and faster, both parent and child are too busy to spare enough time to exchange ideas, even if they find it necessary to communicate. As a result, the gap between them is growing wider and wider.
To bridge this so-called generation gap, in my opinion, both parent and child should make an effort. The children should respect their seniors. The older generation, on the other hand, should show solicitude for the young. As for their differences, both generations should make allowance for each other. If they will take the first step by actually talking to one another, it won't be long before the arrival of a better understanding between parent and child.
3. ADVERTISEMENT ON TV
Today more and more advertisements are seen on the TV screen. It's difficult to find a program without insertion of ads on TV. Food, cloths, domestic appliances, car---everything you can think of---are presented on television. Occasionally, we can also see some public welfare ads, appealing to people to respect the old or to protection the environment. In a word, whether you like it or not, the advertisement pours into your life.
In general, there are two main reasons leading to the prevalence of commercials on TV. With the rapid development of economy, many manufacturers have realized the important role of advertisements in that they can stimulate production and win the market. In our competitive society, consumers usually have the choice of several brands of the same product. Therefore, manufacturers are confronted with such a problem: how to make their products known to consumers. They solve it by advertising on TV, which attracts a lot of people every day. What is more, most consumers are interested in advertisements because they wish to get from TV advertisements the first-hand information about new products, which enables them to make a decision quickly and to choose the one that they like best.
As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of TV ads because some of them are interesting and informative. But there is no denying that some of them are tedious and not trustworthy. Therefore, I think it is really high time that the TV stations strengthened the control of advertisements and made them more attractive.
4.ON MAKING FRIENDS
As a human being, one can hardly do without a friend. As the old saying goes, no man is a island. In other words, no one can survive without the help and friendship of others. And every signpoints to the fact that life will become safer, happier and more interesting if one has friends to share his experiences with. In fact, life's main function, the reproduction and rearing of children, depend on one's ability to from long lasting and stable friendships with his/her closet friend---wife or husband.
How could a person know he has gained true friendship? Some people believe true friendship lies in similar interests while others think that opposites attractive---the idea that two people with opposite characteristics can easily become friends. Whatever the comment, true friendship must be firmly based on trust and understanding.. If a friendship can stand the test of a difficult experience and if one feels confident that, no matter what, his friend has his interest at heart, then he can be sure he has found true friendship.
With different outlooks, individuals may have different principles in making friends. As far as I am concerned, I would be cautious to choose one as a friend and still cautiously make as many as I can.. Once I have made a friend, I will trust him/her completely, talk over things with him/her regularly, keep his/her interests at heart all the time, and give my friend a hand whenever needed.
5. THE "PROJECT HOPE"
Education is the key to the modernizations of our country. The extent to which children are educated is directly of vital importance to the improvement of out comprehensive national power. However, in some poverty-stricken rural areas, few school-agers can afford to go to school because of lack of financial support. Therefore, the CYDF (China Youth Development Foundation) is determined to carry on a financial plan to prevent them from quit school, which is called Project Hope.
The Project is of great necessity. As we know, the children are the hope and future of China. Their being deprived of education will not only result in lack of human resources in those backward areas but also hold back the economic development of these areas and even the whole country. Moreover, the Chinese government is not likely to provide a large amount of money for the hundreds of thousands of school dropouts. Therefore, the Project Hope is initiated by CYDF to offer financial assistance for these youngsters.
My suggestion is that more people from all walks of life should be encouraged to finance the Project with their deeper love and stronger sense of responsibility for these children. And I am sure that the Project Hope has been meeting with hearty and generous response.
6. GOOD HEALTH
The desire for good health is universal. Especially nowadays, the possession of good health is regarded by nearly everyone as essential to a happy life as well as a successful one. Only in good shape can you expect to live comfortably or work effectively. In contrast, without good health, ambitious and promising as a person may be , he will eventually turn out to be a wreckage of modern life.
How to stay healthy, then? First, enough time should be set aside for persevering in exercises in addition to sleep and rest. Second, you must give up the habits that damage your health, such as smoking and drinking too much alcohol. Finally, be sure to have your physical checkup regularly. Whenever you are found to have any disease, you should have it timely treated.
As for me, I have always been taking care to have proper sleep and relaxation. I have also been alert to any discomfort in my body. In my spare time I like running, swimming, and playing table tennis. So, I can keep fit and pursue my career with great facility.

Tobacco consumption is known as one of the most serious problems in today's world. The smokers can be seen everywhere: in streets, in shops, on college campuses and so on. As is shown in the pie graph, there are 1.1billion smokers out of the 5.8 billion people in the word, accounting for approximately 20 percent of the total world population. This tremendous tobacco consumption not only causes vast economic loss but also threatens people's health. It can be seen from the picture that there is a loss of 200 billion US dollars and 3 million lives resulting from tobacco consumption every year.
However, more and more people have become aware of the harms of smoking to human beings. Many of them resist the addiction to tobacco and advise people around not to smoke. Furthermore, governments of many countries have taken effective measures to call on people to give up smoking. As a result, tobacco consumption is experiencing a decrease, which leads to the decline of tobacco production.
According to the figures given in the bar graph, the tobacco production was 14.364 billion pounds in 1994 and in 1995 it reduced to 14.2 billion pounds. So I believe a healthy tomorrow of less tobacco consumption will be achieved through efforts of every person.
8. MY VIEW ON SO-CALLED PROMISES
As can be seen from the cartoon, nowadays many people follow the hen and swarm into the tide of promise-making. But we may observe that some of the promises are nothing but duties these people should fulfill, just like the most common eggs laid by the hen.
However, the reasons for this phenomenon are complicated and such false promises are very harmful not only to the giver but to our society. For example, some people want to make profits from their false promises such as those offered to customers by enterprises. Some other people want to make known to everyone their deeds such as those made by some departments. Promises offered to customers by enterprises are based on the trust between them and the trust is the driving force that makes the economy develop. With the trust, customers expect to buy a certain product with a sense of safety, while the enterprises look forward to promoting sales based mainly on the side of the customers. Nevertheless, the widespread false promises undermine the trust, which will, in the long run, undermine the rapid economic development of our country, too.
So, it's high time that we took measures to put an end to any kind of false ads, forfeit them severely, or fortify special law into effect. And what's more, why can't these people be strict with themselves and draw a lesson from the hen in the cartoon? 9. THE UPS AND DOWNS OF POPULATION GROWTH
As is clearly shown by the two graphs, since 1800, with the rapid growth of the U.S. population, the number of species of wildlife no longer existing shot up, adding up to 70 in 1900. Obviously, the population explosion resulted in the sharp decline of wildlife in this country.
There are two main reasons for this effect. One is that, with the rapid growth of population, people need more and more land to grow crops, to build houses to live in. As a result, there is less and less land and space for the wildlife. Another important reason lies in the fact that a host of newly built factories constantly discharge harmful gases and liquids, which heavily pollute the environment. This pollution, together with other factors, has resulted in a serious ecological problem. All these have made it more and more difficult for the wildlife to survive. Therefore, the population increases while more and more species of wildlife become extinct.
To solve the problem mentioned above, I suggest that the government should take some strong and effective measures such as heightening people's awareness of wildlife protection, keeping population growth under reasonable control, and making as much effort as it can to restore and create more suitable reserves for the survival and development of wildlife. In short, if the government and the whole society really realize the problem, pay attention to it , and work together on it, there is certain to be an encouraging prospect in wildlife protection.
10. 无题图画式作文
The two pictures in "a brief history of commercial fishing"show us that fish have become less and less since the beginning of 20th century. In 1900, when only a few people fished with simple sailing-vessels, there were plenty of fish. As it entered into 1995 and there came an increasing number of advanced fishing-ships, fish became extremely rare. Though it is an exaggeration to draw only one fish remaining, this really warns against the tendency for fish to become extinct. Evidently, which is caused .directly by excessive commercial fishing. If this situation goes on, we will surely have no fish to eat in the near future.
It is most likely that by drawing the pictures, the artist intends not only to tell us the story of fish but also to set us thinking more about nature. First, fish, together with all other natural resources on earth are limited. Second, with modern science and technology, man should not fish excessively just for enormous private interests. Last but not least, we really should take active and effective measures now to counter the excessive commercial fishing for the future of fish and for our offspring. Only on the basis of the protection can man have fish to eat permanently. So protecting and raising fish should go before or simultaneously with fishing. In my opinion, above all, laws must be made: before and while fishing, commercial fishers must raise much more fish or pay high taxes and they must only be permitted to fish certain species in certain areas and seasons. Otherwise, they must be punished: find, vessels confiscated or put into prison. Gradually, man will learn to raise animals especially for earning money, which will be a safe, long-lasting and prosperous cause. As for this, our ancestors, by keeping domestic animals, did much better than we modern human beings do.
11. WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
The U.S. is faced with the problem of wildlife extinction. By the end of 1600, the number of extinct wildlife species was less than ten kinds. But in 1900, the number was more than 70 kings.
There is nothing to make a fuss about the phenomenon. This is, anyway, a definite result of population growth and environment pollution. With the increase of population, people need more and more land to grow crops and more space to live. Thus, there is less and less room in the USA for wildlife to survive. With the rapid development of agriculture and industry, the environment is seriously polluted, which destroys the living condition of wildlife. Therefore, the phenomenon of wildlife extinction, in a sense, should draw people's consideration.
To solve the problem, both the government and the citizens should make efforts together. The government, most important of all, needs to take some measures to control the birth rate so that there will be more room for wildlife species. The citizens, too, should develop their awareness of environment protection.
12. THE WIDENING OF COLLEGE ENROLLMENT
As can be seen from the chart, China's higher education, with the rapid growth of its GDP( gross domestic product), is also developing very fast. There were only about 110 thousand college students when New China was born in 1949, while the number hit 3.5 million 50 years later in 1998. And what impresses us most is the college recruitment of 1999---1.56million, which is 44% higher than that of the previous year---1.08 million in 1998.
Several factors contribute to the booming of China's higher education. First, China's rapid economic development lays the base. In 1952, China's GDP was only 67.9 billion yuan. In 1998, the figure soared to 7.94 trillion. Second, the Chinese government, counting on education to be another force to significantly further its economy, has made a series of preferential policies to quicken the development of higher education. One of the measures taken, for example, is the widening of college recruitment starting from 1999.
Seeing the education boost today, I have every reason to look forward to a still brighter future for China's higher education. I'm sure China will continue to increase college enrollment in the years to come.
13. WHICH TO PREFER—PRIVATE CARS OR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION?
Many people appreciate the conveniences of private cars. A private car gives more comfort and mobility and enables a person to go when and where he wants to, so much so that he can enjoy his leisure to the full by making trips to the country or seaside on the weekend, without the irritation caused by waiting for buses or trains.
But public transportation is also attractive. With someone else driving for us, we can feel relaxed on a bus or subway. And public transportation helps to lessen air pollution and traffic jams. It costs us less money and means more jobs for others.
Both public transportation and private cars, however, have their own disadvantages. In fact the bus system does not provide frequent stops and the location of the bus stops is sometimes not so convenient. And a private car also has many problem, such as too much harmful carbon monoxide emitted. It often puts the traffic in and around the city to much trouble.
As far as I'm concerned, I hate the air pollution and traffic jams caused by private car. So, given the chance, I would prefer public transportation.
14. TAXIS IN CHINA
Today more and more taxis are seen in china. It often happened
In the past that we had to wait for hours until we finally got on board a bus. Being squeezed out of breath like satin in an overcrowded bus, we feel lucky that now we have taxis as an alternative.
There are two reasons for the growing number of taxis in China. For one thing, with the development of living standard, traveling in a air conditioned taxicab is comfortable. Wherever you go, the driver takes care of everything; what you do is just sit in a cozy seat, enjoying yourself in all kinds of weather at any time. For another, in the society of today, taxi is convenient, especially in an emergency or on special occasions. For example, if you are suddenly very sick deep at night with nobody to turn to for help in an unfamiliar place, taxi is always available to help you to go to a hospital. As a result, there is s sharp increase in taxis in China.
As with every problem, there are two sides to the increasing number of taxis, I think. On one hand, the taxi has become an important means of transportation in China. On other hand, more taxis give off more carbon monoxide, which pollutes the environment seriously. And they may cause more car accidents as well. As for this, some effective measures should be taken to deal with it. But I am happy for not having buses as the only choice anymore.
15. TO OPEN THE DOOR OR NOT TO OPEN THE DOOR
As can be seen from the cartoon, the person in bed was seriously harmed by the poisonous carbon monoxide caused by the stove. Fortunately, people came to his rescue in time by forcing the door and the window open. But just as they did this, a few destructive insects, such as the fly and the mosquito, flew in through the opening.
If you were afraid that the fly and the mosquito might come in as a nuisance and hesitated to open the door and the window, the person inside would die. Instead, you force open the door and the window to save the person in danger, leaving the harmful insects alone until you settle with them at your convenience later on. Similarly, when China opens her door to the outside world, the country has found a way to build socialism with Chinese characteristics and has put herself on the road to prosperity. However, in the wake of re form and opening, many negative phenomena have bared their heads---corruption, smuggling, drug trafficking and so on. As a matter of fact, China has launched campaigns to fight against the various forms of crime. All in all, opening-up is more beneficial than harmful.
16. SOLVNG THE REAR SERVICE PROBLEM
Nowadays the rear service problem is even more serious. With the enlargement of college enrollment, rear service falls far behind the need. At the same time, due to its large staff and consumption, it has become an obstacle on the path of the development of universities and colleges.
The rear service problem is put under extreme stress mainly because of three reasons. Firstly, the working methods of the rear service establishments have been outmoded. With the number of students soaring and the inefficiency of those rear service departments, problems like food and shelter pile up. Secondly, the size of rear service is on the rise, with redundancy being a common phenomenon. Statistics show that, on average, two-thirds of the total college staff are administrative personnel and workers. Finally, it costs way too much to keep rear service running, and a serious waster of money and energy on rear service is always a heavy burden which delays the development of higher education. As a result, rear service becomes the target of public criticism.
To relieve universities and colleges of this burden---rear service, reform in rear service system is indispensable. First of all, the rear service should be detached from colleges. And then, increased efficiency, improvement of working methods as well as a cut in redundancy are all necessary. If the reform can be well underway, it won't be long before universities and colleges get an easy breath.
17. EDUCATION: EXAMINATION-ORIENTED OR QUALLITY-ORIENTED
From primary school to college, students, teachers and parents---all are struggling for high scores. This is because the current education system is not aimed at student's quality to perform well on the tests. As a result, many students, even those with high scores, often do poorly when it comes to the practical application of what they've learned.
Therefore, China is challenging examination-oriented education by advocating quality-oriented education. The alternative will focus on the students'ability as a whole. The exam results will no longer play a key role in evaluating a student.
Personally, I firmly believe in the magic force of this new policy. It seems that I have seen in mind's eye the more colorful life, the looser environment, yet the more creative mind of the future students. Our education, so to speak, will bring up a new generation.
18. CHINA'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE STABILITY OF THE RENMINBI
As shown by Graph 1, the exchange rate of the yuan (RMB) fell dramatically from 8.7 against one dollar to around 8.3 during 1994 and 1995, and has been stable ever since. Despite the Asian financial turmoil and its negative impact on China's economic development, China has given her pledge to maintain the stability of the renminbi's exchange rate.
China's refusal to devalue the yuan is rational policy based on the country's domestic economic conditions. Owing to 20 years of reform and opening-up, China's gross domestic product (GDP) surged from 363.46 billion yuan in 1979 to 7.48 trillion yuan in 1997. China's foreign exchange reserves today have hit more than 140 billion U.S. dollars, just next to that of Japan. This enabled China to stand the trials of the Asian financial crisis, shielding the renminbi from devaluation. China's effort to maintain the stability of the yuan, in the long run, is beneficial not only to the country's economic development but also to that of the whole world.
