Early years
  Lopez was born and raised on Blackrock Avenue in the Castle Hill section of The Bronx, New York City ,New York. It was from this neighborhood that she took the local "6" train to get to her auditions in Manhattan; this was later the inspiration for the title of her debut album, On the 6. Lopez's father, David, was computer specialist at Guardian Insurance while her mother, Guadalupe, taught kindergarten in Westchester County. Both her parents were born in Ponce ,Puerto Rico, the second largest city in Puerto Pico . The two were brought to the United States durning their childhoods and eventually met while living in New York City. Lopez has said that it was her parents'work ethic that made a different in her life.
  Lopez is their middle of three daughters. Her older sister, Leslie, is a housewife who sings opera. Her younger sister, Lynda, is a well-known television news anchor at WCBS-TY in New York and is also a DJ on New York's WKTU and a VHI VJ.
  Lopez took singing and dancing lessons from the age of five, including classes at the Kips Bay Boys&Girls Club.She attended twelve years of Catholic school, including an all-female high school called Holy Family in the Bronx. She played softball and tennis in high school and was a gymnast. Lopez is a notable graduate of Preston High School. After graduation, she matriculated at bauth College in Manhattan. She later dropped out to purseher dreams as an entertainer. She briefly worked in a law office. During this time, she continued dance classes at night. At the age of eighteen, she left home because her mother was scared by her decision to persue show business.
  Lopez began her career as a backup dancer. She has worked with Janet Jackson in her music videos and on her tours. She can be seen in her 1993 video for "That's The Way Love Goes".
  Lopez started in television as a 'fly girl'(dancer) on the television comedy program In Living Color in 1990. She moved to Los Angeles to film the show but initially hated it. When her boyfriend, David Cruz, moved to L.A. to be with her, she learned to accpet her new environment.
  She also played a small role in a short-lived television program South Central. She later starred in Second Chances and.
Lopez's Movies
  Lopez started her acting career in the early 1990s with films such as My Family(1995),Money Train(1995), and U Turn(1997), but her real breakthrough would not come until she played the starring role of the lat Selena Quintanilla in the movie Selena(1997) for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination. Lopez followed this with a well-received performance in Out of Sight(1998) with George Clooney.
  She is considered especially adept at romantic comedies, with The wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan being two of her more commercially and critically successful vehicles. Many people consider Lopez to be stronger and more talented as an actress than as a singer (regarding the latter, some criticize her lack of real vocal range and her producers'heavy use of back-ground vocalists). On the other hand, a few of her film performances have been heavily criticized, most notably in the overall disaster and Bennifer [the press' nickname for the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez relationship] vehicle, Gigli, which seemed to have a negative effect on her popularity, something she has only recently been regaining with the back-to-back#1 box office hits, Shall We Dance(2004) and Monster-in-Law(2005).
Lopez's Music
  Lopez's debut album. On the 6, a reference to the subway line she used to take growing up in Castle Hill, was released on June 1,1999 and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. The album featured the multi-week#1 lead single."If You Had My Love", as well as the top ten hit" Waiting for Tonight". It also contained the Spanish language, Latin-flavored duet" No Me Mmes" with Marc Anthony, which was an international hit, though the song was never released as a single in the US. Despite this, the video recieved moderate airplay on the US music channels VH1 and The Box as a novelty.
