My experience as an editor
I am now an editor in our school’s English newspaper YouthRUC. As the teacher asked, I will be glad to share with you some of my editing experience here.
When I receive an article I’ll first read it from the reader’s position. I’d make sure I can get the general idea of the article easily. If not, this one is far from eligible and shouldn’t be published. I may ask the author to rewrite it. Then I’ll judge if the article is worth reading: Have I got any new information from it? Does it teach me anything or lead to some new thoughts? If not, I’ll talk to the author and try to understand his or her intention of writing it. Articles published in the newspaper should bring us news or provide the authors’ viewpoints. I’ll help the writer to shape his view and make sure what information should be provided and what not.
Then I’ll read the article again from the editor’s position. This time I’m critical about the structure. As for news writing, it should be direct and explicit. Important information first and then minor ones, I’d cut some sentences and paragraphs if necessary. And if more details or facts are needed, I’ll asked writer to gather them and make amendments.
For the third time I focus on language using. Well written articles can bring us joy and fun, so I’d make sure the whole writings are harmonious, sentences are smooth and the words are succinct. Grammar mistakes should be avoided, word-spelling and punctuation should be carefully examined.
Also, the title of the article should well conform to the content. A good title should be eyes catching and give clue to the content of the article.
